We have several places along the Riviera Maya that have been declared the Shrine of the Sea Turtles, like Tulum and Xcacel. And ‘possible, in the period of hatching eggs that goes from August to late October, you can get to see the turtles on our beaches to lay their eggs and to help the new born turtles to get to the sea, is really a unique feeling.

Bungalows and beach with some vibrant colors and amazing food and local talent.

The beach is a bit rocky on that side of the island where if you go down 1 mile its nothing but smooth sand

Zamas is an excellent retreat from the world. These rustic bungalows are owned and operated by an American family that couldn't have been more gracious. There is a restaurant on the premises, beachside with amazing views. This place is both secluded yet accessible to all the other wonders of Tulum. Don't just snorkel in the ocean, be sure to visit the many sinkholes in the area, they are magical. Don't miss the monkeys in the rainforest and the ruins by the the water.

I'm not quite sure -- even if you tried really, really hard -- it's physically possible to get stressed out at Zamas (or in Tulum in general). This place is the Mexican beach version of a hippie hotel; the chilled-out restaurant hosted gringos and locals munching on fresh fish and hummus, and sarong-clad women (and men) lazed in the sun, reading Kerouac and Heinlein. We stayed in a beach bungalow, which was, ahem, ... rustic (think sporadic electricity, bathroom behind a tiled wall but not a door). My perfect idea of a vacation is camping but on a really comfortable mattress (especially with the sound of the ocean to fall asleep to and a fantastic restaurant on site), so this was my dream location, but it's not for everyone.

Description

Zamas is a small beach cabana hotel with thatch roofs, stucco walls in beach worn hues and vibrant tile decor. The rustic chic ambience exudes hammock culture. Muy fuerte margaritas, fresh off the boat fish of the day and wood fired pizzas add to the surreal when served at the open air beachfront restaurant. Zamas has an eclecticand international clientele of fashion professionals, artists and ... read more
actors, families, dot comers and everyone inbetween. It is a chill hang out spot, mixing colorful urban roots with laid back local culture. Situated in Tulum, Mexico, Zamas spans three acres along the Caribbean coast. Five kilometers to the north are the Tulum ruins and to the south are forty five kilometers of beach, most of which is within the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. The hotel sits on a cove with a rock bluff, giving the beach one of the rare westward views of sunset over the jungle. Like a swimming pool when the water is calm, the cove is surrounded by rock and vegetation which make for good snorkeling. Fifty meters off shore is a shipwreck where the fish tend to gather. On shore, weathered wood beach chairs under large palm shades lead to long lazy days. For the active traveler, Tulum is an outdoor playground. With one of the worldslargest underground water systems, there is excellent cavediving for the experienced and fun cavern excursions for the novice. All diving, fishing and snorkeling tours are offered by the onsite dive shop at Zamas. The Sian Ka'an Reserve has premier fly fishing as well as abundant bird watching. Archeological explorations are plentiful with four major Mayan ruin sites and many outcroppings in the area. Kitesurfing is now the Tulum extreme sport and paddle boarding is available for the tame at heart. For more refined sports, world class golf has arrived. Just 10 minutes north of Zamas is an excellent course and two other outstanding golf courses are on the coast, including one PGA site.
