This restaurant proves that astonishingly good food does still exist in NYC! The food at Brushstroke is phenomenal and the serene environment and terrific service make the entire Brushstroke experience a hard act to beat. The one thing I would change is the sometimes slightly bright lighting-- and I feel like a nut even mentioning it, because it's literally just a shade or two too bright.
I strongly recommend ordering either the kaiseke or omakase menu and if it's really a special occasion, order the wine pairings as well. The sommelier is awesome and his pairings absolutely elevate the entire experience, but unless you are an accomplished drinker, you may want to go slowly and you may not want to drain every glass. 8 courses of wine pairings is not a tiny amount of booze.
    I adore this restaurant!

Negative marks for the pacing but the food and presentation here are top notch. The food and decor could be mistaken for Tokyo -- almost. Highly recommended though the rushed pace takes a bit away from the otherwise zen potential.

Description

David Bouley’s name may be behind this venture, but the star chef is not in the kitchen. Instead, he has handed the reins to talented import Isao Yamada, who turns out some of the most accomplished Japanese food in the city. The ever-changing seasonal menu, which rotates through 5,000 dishes that Yamada spent years testing, is best experienced as an intricate multicourse feast known as kaiseki.
