- Berat Backpackers HostelGorica 295recommended Berat Backpackers HostelThis hostel has a special place in my heart because when I arrived it was all drywall. During my time there we painted the walls, finished out the guest rooms, placed the beds and hung the lighting ... read morefixtures. Bias aside, it came out beautifully and is a relaxing, fun place to stay. Owner Scott is a blast, and the walk to town isn't so bad at all when you're not carrying a backpack! Perfect Berat stop.Recommended for:
recommended BeratBerat is a mellow city in the southern central part of Albania. There isn't a lot to do, per say, but it's a great cultural experience to visit for that exact reason. The people are just Albanians ... read moredoing their thing, although everyone was exceedingly nice and took time out from whatever they were doing to talk to us. The outdoor market was one of my favorite things to visit, and there is a surprising variety of restaurants throughout the town. If you're in Albania anyway, you might as well check out Berat!Recommended for:

We took the bus everywhere and it was easy and clean. The roads are pretty bumpy in places. It's not on the coast, but we loved Berat for a smaller city than Tirana, although as capital cities go, Tirana is pretty mellow as well.
Food wise make sure to eat the flat breads...sooo good. Also, yogurt!! and Rakia - different everywhere you go. http://katealbania.blogspot.com/2009/05/bread-of-life.html - that's my friend's blog from when she was in the Peace Core there.
