Is it essentially just a very big ferris wheel? Yes. Is it most probably overpriced? Also yes. Does it nonetheless give a neat view out over the Thames, the Houses of Parliament, and central London? Undoubtedly. Sure, it's for tourists, but taking it also reminds you that it's fun to be a tourist sometimes.

Similar to the grand roué of Paris, it's one huge Ferris wheel. We wanted to take a ride the last time we visited however it was the day before new year and it was the center of celebration where the fireworks emanated so for security reasons they closed the area to the public. *sigh* I hope I can try the ride next time.

Wow the most massive ferris wheel I've ever seen! Lots of fun activities to do in the area. The London eye is a bit pricey, but you pay for the views!!

We are a family that likes to find the highest point in a city and climb it. The London Eye does the climbing for us! It's best to book ahead but there is usually plenty of availability during off-peak season to walk up and purchase tickets. Children love the pod, the queue moves quickly and they are contained in the space so you can put your bags down and help them explore the landscape. A full rotation takes 30minutes and there are no toilets so make sure you plan a trip to the toilets with little ones before boarding.

Just across the river is the London Eye! The London eye is great if you take the 'fast track' ticket. You will not have to line up for long. Make sure you get out at the clear point in the day and be confident in the capsule - don't just let the other guests take the view... take your space and enjoy it too.
You can hire the capsule just for yourself too ! With champagne

Simon Burrell of Our Man on the Ground recommends the London Eye. "a visit to The London Eye on a clear summer’s evening as the sun goes down is a must, but book in advance if you want to avoid the lines."

Overpriced, overcrowded but not overestimated. A must do when you are in London, an impressive experience and a privileged view on the city. If possible, try to avoid weekend days and day time.
