Maile's Thai is one of the few good, authentic Thai restaurants in the Hawaii Kai and Honolulu area. I've seen it often while driving to Costco but never went in for a long time. The time I did get to dine and try the food, it was surprisingly good. I'm picky about Thai food and Maile's definitely made it on the high list for Hawaii. The dessert was super good, a little too much coconut milk and very sweet, but still tasty. Thai food isn't cheap on the island, but at Maile's you'll be dining in a classy environment, with friendly and attentive waitstaff.

I have only been here a couple of times and enjoyed my meals both times. The food was good and was prepared close to authentic Thai food. The staff was very nice and friendly. The only negative point from me is the portions are short of par. But I would recommend this restaurant to others despite the portions.

I have been here over a dozen times now so I have a good feel on finally reviewing Maile's. In my last 8 or so visits there it's been an experience of feeling I left the restaurant with average Thai Food at a price range that's WAY TOO HIGH for what you get. Being located in Hawaii Kai it still remains the best Thai Food on the East Side of Oahu but Maile's doesn't have any competition and perhaps that's the problem with the complacency there. This place has gotten lazy over the years. Even with the rise in food costs that's no excuse to have average food. Getting competition for Maile's would wake them up, hopfully to the time when they just opened all those years ago. I will continue to go here but there is nothing to get excited about. I find the staff to be the most exciting thing here and that's a shame. KUDOS to the staff for keeping this place going strong!
First off, I am not surprised at the many positive and negative reviews for Maile's. If anyone has looked over my reviews I love to look over past reviewers and break their reviews down. Especially those who lay the hammer down on a business when they DON'T deserve it, but I have to say here, in the case with Maile's, I have no problems with anyone's past reviews, good or bad.
I have experienced many of the same great things and bad things with Maile's. Being a Chef I have some serious issues with the quality and quantity of their food. Since opening both have been suffering and going down hill. On top of that it has been rumored Maile's loves her MSG...Is this true? Do they really pound it on? For a High Class expensive Thai Bistro in Hawaii Kai this is a total SIN!
Because of this MAJOR RUMOR I feel the only way Maile's can get around this EMBARRASSMENT is to POST a sign on their doors that they use NO MSG to put this to rest! Maile's reputation is at stake!
This Bistro prides themselves on a higher class of Thai cuisine...if this is true not only should there be NO MSG being used but the QUALITY and QUANTITY of Maile's plates need to seriously be stepped up by the chefs here.
Moody F. in a past review said the following: Three reasons we no longer eat at Maile's: (1) MSG; (2) Overpriced for what you get (3) portions have gone down in size.
I HATE to agree with Moody but it's DEAD ON THE MARK!
Let me explain:
My favorite Thai joint to hit up is Phuket Thai on Kamake'e St.
When comparing these two places against each other this is the final result...
1. Maile's has a higher Quality of Service (staff)
2. Phuket Thai has a higher Quality of taste to it's food.
3. Phuket Thai has a higher Quantity of food on it's dishes: for example, last time I got Maile's PAHT THAI with SEAFOOD it had less noodles and less Shrimp then Phuket Thai's PAHT THAI with SEAFOOD...I got 2 shrimp on my Seafood plate on Maile's dish while at Phuket Thai I got 4 shrimp...that's twice as much seafood for a lot less money when you compared it to Maile's...This is a problem. Why would I spend more money at Maile's and get less food and less quality? That's the problem I have...Who wouldn't? On top of that the Thai Ice Tea at Phuket Thai and their desserts are superior to Maile's.
If Maile's is going proclaim themselves as a high end Thai Restaurant and have higher prices to reflect that then they better put more food on their plates...and that food better be of higher quality...
Will I continue to go to Maile's? YES
Will I continue to feel it's too expensive for what I get at Maile's? YES
Do I feel they can give their customers a Higher Quality and Quantity of food? YES.
Will I continue to go to Maile's if a good quality Thai restaurant moves close? That's to be determined, but this may be the best for Maile's because competitions brings the best out of people...With competition I may never have to stop going to Maile's...I hope I don't have to because I do enjoy it here.
Unless things change at Maile's back to the good old days when it originally opened it's only a matter of time before another Thai restaurant opens on the East side and then either Maile's will be in SERIOUS trouble or Maile's will have to change and improve themselves to a higher standard of Quality to compete...
Final word...Give Maile's competition and they will SHINE!
This is why I give them 3 stars because I was here when they first opened and I know for a fact they have a much higher standard than
they are displaying today. I have faith in Maile and I know she looks at these reviews...I also know she will step it up...She has to...Her future,
lively hood and reputation depends on it.Recommended for:Luxury Travelers
