crumbled during the tragic War of Triple Alliance of the 1860s, in which the forces of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay killed two-thirds of the adult males in Paraguay. In some ways, the country has never fully recovered. It is rich in natural resources, home to the world's second largest hydroelectric dam, and exports prodigious amounts of soya beans and beef – but much of its population still languishes in poverty, and its government is reputedly one of the most corrupt in the Americas. The country lights up for Carnaval every February, especially the lovely southern city of Encarnacion.
