The building is a nice modern-design containing a cosy little cafe. It is worth checking what exhibitions are on - sometimes gets some decent ones, or it is nice to just pop your head in and have a wander around. I went to see the Andy Warhol exhibition that was held October-November 2013 - my review of this exhibition is here: http://rbell28.wordpress.com/2013/11/08/part-i-out-and-about-in-edinburgh/

This building cost £450 million to build and it fiercely divided opinion in Scotland for a long time! It was built to house the new Scottish Parliament but alot of people hated the design and thought it a waste of public money. I actually like the design, it's different & quirky in a lovely setting.

Apparently the interior is amazing, but the exterior is a cautious tale for any future architect. The "curtains" on the windows look exactly like guns and the wooden sticks on the backside meant to evoke forests end up looking like prison bars. The smooth grey concrete simply does not fit the area and when I heard it was designed by a Catalan it all made sense since it would fit in perfectly and make a wonderful statement in a place like Barcelona. Edinburgh, however? Not so much.

The building has been the subject of much controversy for its design. If you go inside you can read about the architect's vision of the building as a living tree. There are also tours of the building.

If you start at the top of the Royal Mile, this is a most wonderful discovery awaiting your descent. Compare with Holy Rood for ancient versus modern. Don't let others make your decision, go yourself.

Instead of being a worthy home to Scottish government it is more of an unpleasant reminder of how a lot of money can be waisted on building something that is more of an eye--sore than a joy to behold

It was very unfortunate that Scottish Parliament was closed when I was there. At least the atrium should have been open with some guides there to explain a few things. The exterior of the building is certainly a curiosity. It's hard to take seriously a decision making body when its building is not as exalted as more famous capital buildings.

Description:

Sitting in the heart of the Holyrod district of the Scottish capital Edinburgh, the Scottish Parliament is the devolved Scottish legislative body. The Scottish legislature is commonly referred to as Holyrod in tribute to the area. With 129 democratically elected members elected to four year terms it is not much different from the English parliamentary system. With a new building built to accommodate parliament in 2004 the building is a piece of structural art. Mixing designs from the Scottish past with new architectural techniques the Scottish Parliament is both a fun and educational trip for the whole family.
