This place is alright. My family and I were walking around in the Gaslamp District and a friend had recommended La Puerta, so I recommended that we stop here for dinner. It was a bit late since we ... read more
weren't hungry during the normal dinner hour. We came to the hostess and she told us it would be about 30-45 minutes. They ask for your number to text you when the table is ready. We were only about 20 minutes into the wait (we walked down the street), when I got the text! Don't fret if they tell you a long wait time, just walk around the block and the table may be ready sooner than you think. I have heard the happy hour is awesome, so definitely do that -- half off drinks and apps! The carne asada fries were OK, a bit different from what I was expecting, but I didn't feel it was worth the $12. The Taqueso Pollo tacos threw me for a loop...the meat was wrapped in a cheese shell that was too salty. I really didn't like this...I guess I didn't know what I was getting based on what I read on the menu; my mom told the waitress it wasn't good when she asked how the food was. She explained that the shell around the meat was the cheese. Yeah...we should have just gone with the street tacos. My brother got the Torta La Puerta and thought it was just "meh" as well. His sandwich was a good amount of food though. In sum, I think we just ordered the wrong items. We should have probably gone with the normal street tacos and maybe a burrito/wet burrito. I have a knack for Mexican food too, so perhaps this just isn't my type of food. It is a good place to come for happy hour and to hang out with friends/drink when you're in the Gaslamp though!

soup, with delicious shrimp & pork dumplings. Soup is good for the soul and this one would be great for yours Simple, yet elegant. Our roast duck over rice is a popular favorite. Don't you know? Duck meat is almost as fatty as pork meat, with all dark meat which means more flavor! Try the citrus dipping sauce for even better taste sensations. Fried rice can be substituted for $1. Our beef in oyster sauce over rice has crunch snow peas, carrots & mushrooms, with tender oyster sauce dowsed beef. Fried rice can also be substituted for $1. I would be amiss not to have my friends go w/o complimentary dessert - warm tapioca. Mmm, mmm! Not too sweet, and the warmth is quite reassuring after a hearty meal. A fair amount of seating for groups, small & large. A private area is by the entrance for large groups in need of a more intimate dining atmosphere. Service is good, with the staff attending to whatever requests you need. Parking is right outside, with more spaces available in the Royal Garden parking structure. We have great lunch specials, with soup & fried rice, starting at $6.25! Come, come. You must drop by & have some authentic Chinese food in Cerritos. Xie xie~

I really like the Kimpton line of hotels -- they're not super expensive (they have a range of prices, depending on location of the hotel of course) and they're all pretty nice. Sign up for Kimpton ... read more
InTouch (rewards program); they send you 20% off for any booking on a hotel during your birthday month! That's what I did for this trip with my mom and brother. My mom isn't used to staying in mid-level hotels, so it was nice for me to be able to treat them. The hotel is located in the middle of Downtown SD; my only complaint is the valet parking at the hotel, grrrr...It's located in a great spot with lots of options for family-friendly restaurants as well as options to go out with friends/colleagues. If you walk about 5 blocks down 5th, you'll hit the Gaslamp District, full of bars, restaurants, and clubs. I booked a Deluxe room, which had 2 full beds. The room was nice and spacious with dark wood floors and high ceilings. There's a small TV, plush sofa seat, wardrobe, mini fridge, and desk. The bathroom is modern as well with a sand/stone colored shower and sink. The shower doesn't have a door; it's designed so that you don't splash beyond the opening. The shower is a rain shower, cool! They have their own restaurant and bar, SaltBox. The bar has an entrance from the street level on the outside of the building; the restaurant is upstairs (Mezzanine level from inside the hotel). When I checked in, they gave me a couple vouchers for a drink (up to $13) at SaltBox, how awesome!

use that money on booze. It's free if you go to the cocktail lounge. Tip2: The best view is on your left when you enter. The best best view is in the girls bathroom. By the time it was twilight hour, we saw a long line to be seated. Make sure to show up earlier and request a seat against the window. Me and my boyfriend showed up at 3pm and lounged there for 3-4hours. We kept ordering drinks and snacks and we tipped the server well. Old fashion sucked. Their Irish whiskey was decent. Food is meh. We saw a guy propose to his girl literally right in front of our table lol.
