I have ofter heard it said that Uruguay is South America's best kept secret, and after having spent some time in Montevideo, Maldanado, and Punta del Este, I have to say that that idomatic expression is right on the money. I loved Uruguay with it's friendly people, beautiful beaches, great food, and it's first world type of accomodations. On the flip side, I would caution anyone visting the capital, Montevideo, to be very careful while walking in the downtown area.Recommended for:

This little country has a lot to offer, most important for those not so adventurous is its safety (at least compared to other countries). You have to visit Punta del Este, but also Montevideo, Colonia, and if you like horses/hunting there are a lot of tourist farms you can go to in the Interior. Definitely one of those not so talked about places which will surprise you.
